The recurring images
The stories rhyme across cultures: the soul as a spark struck from a divine fire, a drop returning to an ocean, a fragment of source individuated for a time; or, in the cosmic version, a traveler with a lineage among the stars. What unites them is the conviction that the essential self is not produced by the body but expressed through it — that we are, in some sense, older than our birth.
How the map holds them
These are matters of faith and inner experience, not evidence, and the map says so without diminishing them. It presents the stories as a family of meaning-making about the nature of the self, deeply held and often steadying, and connects them to the consciousness evolution layer, where the same intuition — that awareness is fundamental rather than incidental — is explored in a different key. The wisdom traditions supply many of the oldest versions.
Whatever the soul's true provenance, these stories answer a need the body's origin cannot: the need to know not just how we were made, but who, underneath it all, we are.
