Sumer left behind the oldest writing we have, and its myths of gods shaping humanity from clay are genuine documents, not modern inventions. That much is history, and it is strange and old enough on its own to be worth sitting with.

The theory endures because it answers a question that genuinely nags: why does the human story seem to lurch rather than climb?
