The grain of truth
There is something real to point at. Institutions of many kinds — religious, political, commercial, even "spiritual" — can discourage questioning, reward conformity, and narrow the range of what feels thinkable. Where that happens, a kind of ceiling does form over shared awareness. As a description of how unquestioned frameworks can limit a group, the idea names a genuine dynamic.
Where the map marks belief and keeps care
The stronger version — that religion or belief is a deliberate device engineered to suppress humanity's consciousness — is the map's own interpretation, offered for reflection and clearly marked as belief, not established fact. And it must be held without contempt: to say a structure can narrow awareness is not to call the billions within it foolish. Most people inside any tradition are sincere, and many find in it the very opposite of a block. The map keeps the thesis humble.
